Orienteering (scouting) 1:25:00 [1] *** 4.5 km (18:53 / km)
spiked:1/5c

It was odd not being able to quickly locate the spots I'd selected. I think, were I a competitor, I would've been able to see flags at the chosen spots, but the 0.5 meter knolls and 0.3 meter pits were a bit subtle in real life. So some are getting dropped or tweaked. On the whole I'm now looking to scale it back just a bit, maybe shorten everything a smidge and drop a few controls as I start to worry about event logistics. Still a great day to be in the woods, even if briefly.

Also, it might've been slightly easier with a compass. I wish I weren't so absent-minded!

Note

Crushing fatigue is lifting, and my teeth no longer hurt when I tip my head (suggesting sinus infection was cause). So perhaps back to exercise soon. Mostly likely red and green scouting at Peach Mountain on Saturday. Snow will make it a little fun.

Note
(sick)

Holy crap. Had a runny nose yesterday, but woke up today and just went downhill. Took dear daughter to practice, by the time I got back I just wanted to sleep off the cold/flu whatever. After a couple hours, I was worse, and welcomed death. Then dear wife brought up medicine and after a couple more hours I didn't feel completely awful. I can't remember the last time I felt that horribly sick.

Walking (hills) 45:00 [3] 2.34 mi (19:14 / mi) +449m 12:03 / mi

Current Ringer. Nice workout. I will try to gradually up the pace for this 12% grade. ~3.2 mph today.

Walking (hills) 20:00 [2] 1.0 mi (20:00 / mi) +192m 12:32 / mi

1 mile @ 3 mph @ 12%. Should've gotten up earlier. At least I figured out why the xboxes aren't connecting - seems the Windows Media Center Network Sharing service wasn't starting.

Now the next level down...why that suddenly stopped starting reliably, and also why rampant fan noise is more frequent...those I don't know.

Would've been more like 45:00 but something's up with the damn desktop and it keeps ignoring the xboxes. :(

Walking 20:00 [3] 0.5 mi (39:59 / mi)

Pull daughter on sled.

I have some hope that perhaps my leg discomfort is related to running with my 45 ish pound daughter on my hip. I've made a point of not doing that, and it seems to be less of an issue, after noticing that a 25 meter dash into school one day set it off a bit. Oddly it's not the leg on the side I carry her, but maybe the offside leg gets some side loading or other odd forces and the on side leg is more directly loaded.

But five miles mostly off trail Saturday, granted walking, and it's fine today.

Orienteering 2:00:00 [1] 7.8 km (15:23 / km)

I was planning to scout orange at Peach Mountain, but got distracted by reds along the way, and then at the orange halfway point, I was lured west by some interesting terrain so I went through the west side gravel pit and then south from there until I rejoined orange and then sort of did orange on the way back, with a slight detour to an original but not anymore red point.

If you can reliably find the green Xs and Os out there, you are a better man than I.

It was a great day to be outside. Jeff bailed because it was too cold (15 deg F). I wore socks with neoprene sock liners, tights w/ pants, a t shirt, sweater, and a normal winter coat, and was good to go. I wore glove shells, not even with a liner, no problem.

Note

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

something is wonky with shin. i have no desire to go to the doctors office, so we have two possibilities:

* muscle/tendon pain, ice and strengthen until it hurts less

* tibial stress reaction, rest and no impact, for 4-12 weeks

this sucks so much. From seven miles at Pontiac Lake with hardly any jogging? After pounding around Proud Lake a month earlier with impunity, and other activities since?

the best gift a weekend warrior could hope for is injury resistance. I have/had such hopes for the year.

Got up late, surprise surprise, so I just crammed this in, expecting I may have discipline issues this evening.

Biking (trainer) 45:00 [3]

I stayed up too late chatting with my brother, so I slept in this morning. Fortunately, my wife wanted to hit the treadmill for three miles, so we all went downstairs for some X Factor X ercise. I actually was pushing a bit more than my usual morning sessions.

Note
(rest day)

Post rogaine rest. Not too sore; shin feels about the same. Victory!

Orienteering (rogaine) 5:46:00 [5] 22.0 km (15:44 / km)

Up at 3 am, met Tony "Unmapped Trail Finder Extraordinaire" Misovski at 4 am, and drove to Laurelville, Ohio, for the Cabin Fever 6 hr Rogaine.

Some snow gave us concern, as it severely limited visibility and reduced speeds, but after a half an hour, it was clear sailing and we arrived approximately 75 minutes early per the plan.

It was like an Infiterra reunion, with regular adventure racers Rick Waldo and Drake White on site as well. I saw some more Infiterra apparel but I didn't recognize the team.

Maps were available on check in, so Tony and I tried to figure out a route. Straight line for all points was only about 20km, so I briefly thought it might be possible to get them all.

Then we were off. We had selected an easy point to get acclimated to the terrain and scale. The hill climb was brutal. 12 contour lines at 20' per. Just lung crushing. But the point was were it was promised and we were off for the next. Really had to get used to the scale here. Then again some hesitation to the third as we tried to keep count of reentrants and spurs.

The hills would take their toll. When we hit the three hour mark, it was clear that a clear was not in the cards for us, so we tried to adjust, and perhaps missed a few opportunities to add easy points on the way to some high value points.

We finished after 5 hours and 46 minutes with 14 of the 22 points. I think Rick said he missed two or three, and Drake was around 18. Someone did clear the course with ample time to spare. That was not their first time in Tar Hollow.

This was fun and I'd like to do another rogaine again! Preferably after a lot of time on a stair machine or max incline treadmill.

Erg rowing 50:00 [3]

Latest Ringer. I again got up around 5 without using an alarm. And I managed a slightly higher intensity than usual, at least I perceived that, but I should really dig up the heart rate monitor one of these days.

Given the no alarm wake up, perhaps tomorrow, when I get up at 3 am to meet Tony for the 6 hr Cabin Fever Rogaine in southeast Ohio, I will not feel completely and utterly awful, just kind of awful.

Biking (trainer) 1:25:00 [3]

Got up before five without using the alarm, and then watched Taken on the trainer. If I do that for the next four months, the Fury should go well!
