checking controls at Butler County (Ohio) Fair. Skyler and Jordan put them out, and all were ok except that Jordan hadn't checked descriptions and one had to be moved a couple meters from a small building to an adjacent tree.

While hanging the OUSA banner from the metal roof supports of the barn where we were set up, some little rust shards fell in my face - one got in an eye. Attempted to wash it out with tap water, then the local EMT's tried to flush it out with a squirt bottle of saline, but no luck. So I ended up having to go off to the eye doctor and leave the boys in charge for a couple hours - they did great until I got back - none the worse for wear. Eye seems good - still a bit dilated and watery, but still planning to do the GCM 6 hour day-night rogaine Sat evening.

We got quite a few young participants; I hope that a few will come back for regular events and TROL season.

Goals for next year: 1. Arrange to stay open later in the evening (there were still a lot of people coming in). 2. Arrange to have a competitive course for fair awards / ribbons (and all of the fair award winners get listed in the local paper, so that would be good for promo too), in addition to having the educational / recreational exhibit and demo course. 3. Maybe print maps at a smaller scale. I got two 1:5000 scale maps on each 8.5 by 11 sheet, which saved printing costs, but I think a more blown-up version would be good for demo course and explanation of the map. Competition could still be at 5000.

mapping - field checking 3:20:00 [1] ***

Updating Miami Whitewater. Quite a few minor adjustments, most old rootstocks are getting eliminated and a few new ones are getting added. Lots of changes to white and light green areas, so far a bit more going from green to white than the other way.

walking 4:50:33 [1] 12.3 mi (23:37 / mi)

Wolf Creek Trail from Causeway to the midway power line crossing and back. A few places overgrown and in need of a few new blazes. Very buggy. Got so many spiderwebs stuck to me that I actually caught a pesky deer fly in them! Miles 4 and 5 were slower mainly due to finding trail.

Miles out: 21:28, 19:01, 25:33, 29:13, 31:46, 27:51.
Miles in: 24:19, 18:23, 24:12, 22:17, 20:18, 21:14.

orienteering race 1:04:00 [3] **

ARDF training course at Sharon Woods. Knocked out 4 controls in under 30 minutes. Then royally fouled up number 5. It didn't help that the transmission sequence was wacky: 1-5-4-2-3. Found in order 1-3-2-4. Got a good start to number 5 and on the next cycle should have been pretty close. But somehow ended up listening to 4 again, doing a 180, going through really nasty woods and eventually ending up at 4 again. At that point I figured out what I had done, and got back close enough to 5 to hit it on the next cycle.

Brookville Lake: Midway Trail and portions of Wolf Creek. Mileage is estimated minimum, actual could be a little higher. At least 20 minutes trying to find the trail at one point where it made a sharp turn and was poorly blazed and maintained.

trail running race 59:34 [5] 5.3 mi (11:14 / mi)

A very muddy edition of the annual East Fork Backpack Trail Run (counterclockwise, start at Indian Mound). Normally a mile or so of horse trail is muddy. This year, everything was. I was pretty beat from the ARDF and hash run yesterday to start with, and this run had it all: mud, heat, mud, humidity, mud, puddles, mud, slippery wooden bridges, and did I mention mud?

Miles:
9:57,
10:56,
11:31 (walked most of last big uphill before mtn bike parking lot)
12:22 (took at least 20-30 seconds trying to drink a small cup of water, which my body absolutely did not want - might have needed it, but sure didn't want it! Into the horse trail section and the worst slop of the race)
12:28 (walked part of a few of the uphills in the last mile)

37th / 110, 2nd in 55+, 5th 50+
33rd / 110 in age - gender graded results

last did this race in 20:11 with a time of 54:40 (27 / 61)
