Note

Ankle is a bit swollen and internally bruised. Not too sore to walk on as long as I don't bend it over, but guess I'd better go easy on it for a while.

Strength 50:00 [2]

Hauled and split 2 loads of wood, and did workout 3. Limited foot/kneehab due to ankle.

8 AM

Running 2:49:32 intensity: (29:01 @2) + (1:10:44 @3) + (1:04:56 @4) + (4:51 @5) 23.92 km (7:05 / km) +995m 5:52 / km
ahr:158 max:201 shoes: Hoka Mafate 2

Hockley loop with Greg Y.

Foggy morning, but despite a sore throat I really enjoyed the run.

The bad news was a nasty ankle roll at around 9km, naturally on an easy part of the trail. Good news was I had my poles on the pack, and they helped me run well even with a gimpy ankle.

We did the full new loop, with the more technical new bit.

Felt fast on the downhills in the Hokas.

Nice lunch with Bash afterwards.

Friday Sep 27, 2013 #

Strength 40:00 [2]

Short workout 2 and some lumberjack work.

Cycling 2:05:00 [3]

Fantastic day for a ride through Albion. No mud, no bugs, no wind, no humidity, perfect temps. Bash joined me for the first half. The 'bent cornered like it was on rails in the firm conditions even with my lack of practice this year. I tried to get some self- video going over the biggest rock on the trails, one most folks bypass.

Wednesday Sep 25, 2013 #

Strength 1:20:00 [2]

Workout 1, extra KBs, foot/kneehab, and hauled another load of logs out of the bush.

Think I may have a cold coming on...

Cycling 55:00 [2]

Ride to work and back via the longer route with the big guy. He was quick today, and good running in the dark.

Some dufus laid many small logs across the trail in Palgrave West. Maybe trying to discourage someone? All light enough for me to throw off to the side, but somebody has an agenda of some sort but is too cowardly to come forward with it.

Tuesday Sep 24, 2013 #

Running 52:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks CP6 Green

Easy commute with Bulletdog. I managed to get her undue the fence while I hopped over, so we didn't have to do the nasty crossing of Hwy 50.

Monday Sep 23, 2013 #

Cycling 55:00 [2]

Rode the new route with the big guy. He got a good gallop on for the way home, after some early dragging. He loves the cool weather!

Sunday Sep 22, 2013 #

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Foothab, kneehab, Link workout + extra pull-ups and core.
7 AM

Running 2:14:50 [3] 20.16 km (6:41 / km) +368m 6:08 / km
shoes: Salomon FellCross

Took Bazingadog out to run with the BARFs in Palgrave. Good to catch up with Greg Y and the gang. BZ dog was loving the cool temps- he had lots in the tank at the end.

Saturday Sep 21, 2013 #

Running 45:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon Crossmax Green

Rain stopped, so the dogs and I went for a run- found a tree fallen on the trail making it impassible so cleared that, then met Steve and his pack of 4 dogs who live at Wheelrights, so went with him to the pond where my guys swam.
Fun time had by all the beasts, but Bazingadog is a little cowed by Ziggy the 10kg Puggle.

Friday Sep 20, 2013 #

Cycling 1:00:00 [2]

Easy ride to the office to pick up the farm food. Bazingadog didn't have much BaZIng today.

Longer route than usual as the nasty folks have boarded up the official access to my commute, so now I have to cross the highway North of the river instead of taking the underpass by the river. Also no way to swim the big guy now. More doubletrack/ sidewalk, less trail.

Strength 1:00:00 [2]

Workout #3 plus full foot/kneehab.

Wednesday Sep 18, 2013 #

Running 35:00 [3]
shoes: Hoka Mafate 2

Feeling a little lazy this morning, so just ran to work. Bazingadog had another go at the sprinklers at the golf course- I almost peed myself laughing!

Tuesday Sep 17, 2013 #

Cycling 1:05:00 [2]

Frosty morning, so great for the big boy to bike in with me. Nice ride home- met Wayne on the Singletrack, and the hound was good with chasing him a bit. Did the Charlevoix loop on the way back too- perfect early fall conditions.

Monday Sep 16, 2013 #

Running 30:00 [2]
shoes: Cascadia 7

Run home with Bulletdog. Calves sore from running in minimalist shoes on flat trail.

Sunday Sep 15, 2013 #

Note

New human powered speed record- Delft University's Velox beat Canadian Sam Wittingham's previous record by 0.6kph, and hit 133.78kph on a flat, calm course.
http://www.hptdelft.nl/en/

Graeme Obree, the Flying Scotsman, set a prone cycling record of 91kph basically lying on his stomach on his Beastie bike.
https://default.secure.media.ipcdigital.co.uk/1114...

Strength 1:15:00 [2]

Workout 2 plus some core, foot/kneehab, and more hauling and stacking of big logs from the latest big branch to spontaneously fall from our poor pine tree. I'm going to have to have a splitting party once they freeze up.
9 AM

Running race 44:23 [5] 10.13 km (4:23 / km) +59m 4:15 / km
shoes: Salomon Sense

Terry Fox run with Bazingadog.
I haven't done any speed work since before France, and Bazingadog has never run in a race with a lot of people and dogs.

He was completely gaga at the start, and took off out the gate at a full gallop chasing the cyclists. Our first km was a 3:36, with a 2:53 top pace. We led all the runners for the first 3K or so, when it was time for a bathroom stop for him. This was followed by a nice swim at the half-way point, when Goose caught up with us. 2 fast lads passed us there, and we never caught them.

On the way back he was more interested in stopping for pee-breaks, and pulling back to see the other approaching runners and dogs on the out-and-back course. I think he had 5 bathroom breaks in all.

By the end of it I was pulling him along, and he finished 3rd with Goose and me with his tongue almost dragging on the ground, but he perked up pretty well after a cooldown, a few cups of water and 4 breakfast sausages.
10 AM

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon Sense

Warm-up, and a run back down the trail to get Bash for a cooldown.

Saturday Sep 14, 2013 #

Paddlng (Erg) 40:00 [2]

Easy paddle on the erg.

Cycling 1:20:00 [3]

Solid ride down to Albion and through the North trails. Ahh, nice to be riding them again.

Friday Sep 13, 2013 #

Note

I think almost everything in my upper body is still sore from Wednesday's first workout in a few weeks. Core, shoulders, lats, chest, tris, yep. That'll teach me.

Thursday Sep 12, 2013 #

Note

Note - I used my Bentblaster on level 2 and 3 with medium battery all night at CCC. I wanted to see how much charge was left- so far it's gone another 6 hours on level 3

Note

What happens when a sport allows technology a free reign:
The America's Cup yacht races have allowed designers to simply build the fastest boats. They've gone from very fast monohull superyachts to unbelievably fast catamaran hydrofoils, more than doubling the speed.

http://www.bentrideronline.com/messageboard/showth...

If only they'd allow this in cycling...

At the Battle Mountain HPV races, preliminary unofficial speeds of up to 123.1 kph have been clocked on a dead flat, dead calm course this week.

Running 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: Salomon FellCross

Easy run to work with a very enthusiastic Bulletdog. It was a bit humid for her.
Slow trot home, as I had about 20kg of fresh produce from our CSA farm, which drops off for the community at my office.
Mmmm, fresh Tomatillo Salsa for dinner with grilled pepper and fresh tomato fajitas.

Note

I finally got my custom rx biking/ orienteering glasses. I had a pair of Adidas in the past with an rx insert in the past, but found it pretty useless when they fogged up between the lenses, or when the insert cracked.
I have a high rx, and also need a progressive reading prescription.

I usually wear contacts, but I have problems with them, and I need a special reading rx along with sunglasses with a reading insert for reading maps or fixing bikes. I just can't see close up well with contacts.
I am not a good candidate for laser surgery either, or I'd do it in a second.

I had gotten some Rudy Project Horus glasses as they have an rx lens option, but nobody here could put my rx into it as it was too high.
At a local MtB race the Adidas rep swore it was possible to do an in-lens rx for me, and gave me the name of a special lab in Newmarket. After many go-arounds and a lot of poor communication, I finally got a second-hand message that I can only have the add-on rx insert with my rx. Total waste of time.

Bash happened to read a blog about a lab in the US that can do odd rx for sports glasses.
http://www.adseyewear.com/prescription-rx-sunglass...

When I contacted them, they said "sure, we can do it. Do you want photochromic, antiglare, mirrored..." Wow! I was a little leery of laying down a lot of $ for lenses by mail, and getting the reading rx right. Their comm was excellent, they sent me the frames with regular lenses and had me do photos of my eyes with one lens in and one out for positioning, and I got photochromics with anti-glare.

I got them yesterday. They work! Totally clear indoors, but darken up outside, so I can use them day or night. I can see distance, and read a map.
They look a bit odd when they are clear, because the peripheral lens is always tinted, while the rx portion is not. Bit of a vintage motorcycle goggle look, but once tinted they look normal.

http://www.adseyewear.com/prescription-rx-adidas-e...

I'll have to see how they work with fogging issues, but so far so good.
Great for my commute, better than my regular glasses for protection.

Maybe I will finally have a solution for reading o-maps properly.

These guys can do all sorts of glasses too. I was really pleased with them.

Strength 1:10:00 [2]

Workout #1, with some KBs, core and foot/kneehab. We'll see how the foot likes it this time.

Running 50:00 [3]
shoes: Cascadia 7

Stinking hot, but still a fast, effortless run in the little hills of Caledon. Felt great to run!

Running 27:00 [2]
shoes: Cascadia 7

Nice night run home.

Cycling 1:00:00 [3]

Too hot for dogs, so I was able to take the Singletrack home after a long tough day.

Monday Sep 9, 2013 #

Cycling 55:00 [2]

Harnessed up the big beastie and hopped on the 'bent for a ride to work and back. Nice to be riding again!

Thursday Sep 5, 2013 #

Hiking 1:00:00 [1]

Up the trail from Phats and Leanimal's place with the Tiny clan and Bash to the Prevernet. Fantastic view over Lac Annecy. They sure have a nice backyard trail!

We had a great lunch in the old town, then drove up the Semnoz for a magical picnic at sunset later.

Note

Pics are up for race report.

A few notes- I could have gone faster on the flats and gradual downs perhaps, but MsGally's climb pacing was a huge help- it turned out to be perfect. Going any faster on climbs would have just meant feeling sicker.

From 2013 France CCC

Not sure if I should have moved even further back in the pack on the first huge climb, and climbed with an even lower HR? It would have been pretty frustrating.

Here's a link to the conga-line image- at higher mag you can see it snake all the way to the top.

https://picasaweb.google.com/rehrlich1/2013FranceC...

Must remember ginger pills and candied ginger next time I feel ill. It only came up once in my year of training on the longest run, so I wasn't able to test remedies for nausea.

I will always pack more of my own race food, things like chips and stuff that may not be in aid stations.
Bring an empty drink bottle to fill with coke or soup and bring along, as sometimes that's all that will go down. Ginger ale would be even better.

Might consider a Steri-pen so I can quickly get water on course, rather than carrying more onboard in areas like this with frequent mountain streams.
4 AM

Running 4:50:25 intensity: (33:55 @0) + (2:16:29 @1) + (1:57:11 @2) + (2:27 @3) + (23 @4) 30.64 km (9:29 / km) +1490m 7:37 / km
ahr:124 max:165 shoes: Hoka Mafate 2 B

Fairly easy run with Storm to the Col before the big climb to Tete du Vents, where he headed up the steep rocky switchbacks to do the last stage of the race, while I jogged down to Valorcine. Much more scenic in daylight. They basically rolled the town up since UTMB, and there wasn't so much as a coffee available, but the scenic bus/ train ride back was nice.
