trail running 25:00 [2] * 2.5 km (10:00 / km)
weight:163lbs shoes: Jalas hi-top 2010

UCMS Orienteering training. Shadowed Nathan and Russ on a yellow course at Mounds SRA. Jamie also did yellow, but we never caught up to him, although I saw him up ahead once. Caleb and Dylan completed a brown course in about the same time, while Skyler and Jordan blazed through a white course. We did "A" meet style starts, and for the most part the kids did the courses on their own. Nathan caught up to Russ pretty quickly and for the most part they were pretty close together, but then Russ got ahead coming out of 8 on the long leg to 9.

Noah and Chloe Greene also showed up with their mom and did part of the yellow course (Luckily they quit before the dreaded control #8).

Some of this was crawling and fighting through the brush and thorns leaving the dreaded number 8. Nathan and Russ both found it ok (as did Caleb, Dylan, and Jamie). But vegetation has gotten very thick in this area, and this was way too tough for yellow. Nathan and Russ didn't choose to go back out the same way they came in, which in retrospect would have been much easier. (I used old courses from a TROL meet a couple years ago)

Desert O in the snow. Set 4 controls. Then shadowed Gian. Brief but heavy snowfall covered the cacti. Given the conditions, we decided enough and the whole group adjourned to Olive Garden for an early lunch.

orienteering race 1:09:38 [4] *** 5.8 km (12:00 / km) +110m 10:58 / km
13c shoes: Jalas hi-top 2010

"Classic" red course at Catalina State Park. Another fun day in the desert Southwest. One four minute error when I left a control at about ninety degrees off direction, but unlike certain other prominent orienteers (no names will be give here so don't even ask), I discovered the mistake in time to keep from running off the map. Other than that I lost about a minute when I hit a cactus with knee and thigh while reading the map. Plucked it off but after about two more strides had to stop and actually drop my pants to remove a couple more offending spines. Glad the girl scouts were not nearby :-).

Camino del Sol. Probably lost 20 seconds or so when I stopped to toss a few cholla buds out of the road. Landscapers has been working in the area and I figured it was better to lose a few seconds on my run than to pick up the spines with the car tires!

orienteering 20:00 [2] ** 1.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
weight:160lbs shoes: Icebugs

Training with UCMS kids at Hueston Woods. Did a line-O with Alex, Jamie, and Nathan, then jogged out to check on kids as they did a short yellow level course.

Caleb, Dylan, Noah, Tristan, Jamie, Alex, Nathan

kids did some short map-memory legs, the line-O, and the short course.

Checking controls at Miami Whitewater. It looks like the beaver have probably managed to derail my plan for a 2.7 km leg on red course by flooding a valley for several hundred meters. I'm considering options but I don't think the leg works, certainly not as well, with many options blocked by high water.

In honor of the afforementioned beavers, I am considering giving a time bonus to anyone who runs the entire course while wearing a genuine beaver hat.

walking 15:00 [1] * 1.0 km (15:00 / km)
1c weight:161lbs (sick) shoes: Icebug 2012

Walked (and a very little easy jogging) with Caleb out to visit a control that gave him trouble during his race at Possum Creek.

Although the cold seems pretty well gone, I didn't think that it would be in my best interest to run a course today, otherwise, I'd have loved to try my hand at the "purple".

weight:160lbs (sick)

Visited eye doctor. Eye 100% healed, no problems. Yea! Cold is still lingering, so no hard exercise today. Did a few minutes of stretching exercises to relieve boredom while waiting for the eye doctor to come into the examining room.

Planned to check a few more controls at Miami Whitewater after the eye doctor visit, but the serpentine belt of my car had other ideas, taking out the power steering reservoir along with it when it decided to come apart. Did manage to drive it home and thence to auto shop; I suppose I could count steering without power assist as some sort of upper body workout! :-)

checking control sites at Miami Whitewater, very easy pace. Cold is still lingering, so didn't want to push my luck by doing any running or real exertion.

Miami Whitewater. Some very significant changes and additions to a horse trail. got some of them but will need more time to complete them all. a few other very minor updates.

Note
(sick)

Bad cold and cough. Had some sniffles over the weekend and thought it was getting better on Sun but I think the combination of being out all day in that bitter cold plus running to pick up controks lowered my resistance and gave it a new foothold.

Had the UCMS kids do a course on the school grounds. Each kid had to set two controls, then went to the controls set by the other kids.

When everyone was back and refreshed, then we did a search-and-destroy for control pickup. Dylan won that with three controls, but Alex persisted and came in with two.

Only four today: Dylan, Alex, Jamie and Nathan.

walking 5:00 [1] *

Putting out the final 3 controls for the Diamond Oaks meet. Temperatures in the low 20s F, and a wind blowing through the shelter made it feel much colder.

Saw a flock if over 30 wild turkey on my way to the park.

trail running 5:00 [2] *
1c shoes: Icebug 2012

Jogged out to replace a malfunctioning control unit. Chief Moyer came along to see some of the course.

walking 10:00 [1]

Showing Chief Moyer a little more of the course and also a hole cut in the boundary fence.

Control pickup at Diamond Oaks.

walking 5:00 [1]

Searching for a control unit dropped by an undisclosed party during pickup. Found it.

Putting out remaining 19 controls at Diamond Oaks. Just 3 more very easy (and visible) ones to do in the morning. Light snow started before dawn, and 5-10 cm was predicted, so I started early. The snow effectively hid my tracks to most of the controls, although it was letting up by the time I finished. But we might get a little more this afternoon and tonight.

Setting controls at Diamond Oaks for Sunday's event. Bitter cold. An odd branch of honeysuckle slapped me hard in the eye. I was able to get in to Cincinnati Eye institute (even though it was 5:00 on a Friday evening when I called and 5:45 by the time I got there) for a quick check. They dabbed out a very tiny piece of something and gave me some antibiotic drops for a very minor corneal erosion (scratch on the surface layer) which should heal completely and quickly without further treatment.

Probably would have been fine without treatment but with eyes, I figure better to be overly cautios than the alternative.
