Miami Central Quad. Did more work around the new student center plus found quite a few other significant updates. Got to observe a young buck deer at very close range in Bishop Woods. This is the second time I've seen a deer in there and it still amazes me that they find this tiny woodlot in the middle of a busy campus.

9 holes golf with dad and Paul Simon at Neumann (white).

mapping - field checking 1:30:00 [1] 2.0 mi (45:00 / mi)

College Corner with UC orienteering students. Finished last few blocks of the town, plus the kids took me on a tour of a small woodlot and showed me a couple more public passages through private lands. We finished up with hot dogs, beans, and mac and cheese at Jamie's. Mostly walking but we jogged a couple sections.
Present: Sam Brennan Alex Jamie Nathan Luke.

8 PM

trail running 30:19 [3] 2.7 mi (11:14 / mi)
shoes: Starter Strike

A somewhat slow run at Miami Natural Areas. Fit slowed down a bit at the stepping stones crossing because of a large rootstock that had washed downstream and lodged in the "stones" (circular concrete pillars). But I figured out I could climb over the top of them and continue across. Then tripped on a stump and had a hard fall. Don't think I injured anything although one finger was really sore and tingly numb for quite a while. A couple other bruises but nothing major. Trails were still quite wet and went slip-sliding on a couple muddy spots, but only the one fall.

Sunday May 18, 2014 #

Event: SMOC Chilson

trail building / maintenance 6:00:00 [2] 7.0 mi (51:26 / mi)

Mostly light lopping on Buckeye Trail in my segment of Scioto Trail State Forest.

weights / strength 30:00 [3]

About 40 minutes of really intense chainsaw. A large tree had fallen across the trail and large trunks had snapped and twisted together like interlocking pick-up-sticks. Tricky work since every part was resting on two or three other parts with every cut potentially setting off a chain reaction of blade jamming and flying timbers.

mapping - field checking 40:00 [1] **

Spent 20 or 30 minutes working on the College Corner (urban) map before heading up to school for Union County O meeting.

Present Sam, Alex, Jamie, Nathan and Luke. Severe storms had formed very quickly over the last hour or so over southwest and central Indiana, and some small patches were starting to show up closer, so I had pretty much decided to stay indoors and finish up early.

We started by doing a review of control description symbols. First looked at a couple real description cards (without the map) and had the kids read the clues. Then opened up condes and went through the whole menu of description symbols. The kids are pretty good on the common ones but had trouble with some of the less commonly used symbols.

By then it appeared that the storms would miss us and the kids really wanted to get outside. So we headed to the Miami U Campus where I turned them loose with Miami Central Quad maps, clipboards, and 4-color pens. The goal was to update the map and accurately depict the newly completed Armstrong Student Center, a massive complex that incorporated two previously existing buildings. Sidewalks were in new places, trees had been removed, a road had been realigned, and of course there was the building itself with several large patio areas. The kids did a fairly decent job of figuring it all out, although I will have to do a little touching up.

We adjourned inside to gather around a table and go over the map updates, and watch a long line of students slowly inching through the food line at the stir fry place. The food looked great but the line was creeping ever so slowly, so we walked uptown for sandwiches at Skippers instead.

Saturday May 3, 2014 #

road running 34:55 [3] 3.41 mi (10:14 / mi)
shoes: Starter Strike

Nighttime jog through a golf course subdivision of Clovis, New Mexico. Had a bit of empathy for Thomas the Maze Runner as each street I turned on promptly twisted in a new direction. No Grievers, though; just a few yappy dogs (and one snarling brute, fortunately behind a stout fence). But hey, it was a clear night - Mars was in the east and the moon in the west, so keeping oriented really turned out to be pretty easy
Miles: 9:53, 10:21, 9:53.
Note: 582 mile driving day, Green Valley AZ to Clovis NM.
