Walking 30:00 [0] 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Parked at the south end of the Tree Farm, hiked up to the play area.

Harvey: "That's Jacob", one of his daycare friends.

Me: "That's silly, you can only see his eyes with his hat and mask, plus that's far away."

Two minutes later, other kid's mom: "Is that Harvey?"

Last 0.75 miles w/ 35 lb load.

Very fun course. This time with Cris. Stated clear distance was in the 18ish mile range; I did 22 last year (granted, flatter), so I thought we had a chance, plus go big or go home.

We were ahead for the first 1.5 hrs, then a little more like parity at 2 hrs (lost a few minutes not thinking a tarp was special, hahaha), then quickly started to slide on the challenging Dead Lake portion, especially with the slow travel through 62.

I thought there was an outside chance of clearing the east, but we moved too slowly and had a couple bobbles...notably on easier ones in thicker vegetation where I didn't give them proper respect.

Painful to drop the NE five, but necessary as we only had like 15 minutes to spare. Just need a bit more run power from 1.5-3 hrs to not get quite so far behind, and then a lot more hill power and speed walk power.

25 of the 30 marked, all three of the Nain Rouge c. We had a good guess on the "small island" one, so we were sure to hit it.

10/10, would race again.

As I was already soaked, I was easily cajoled into picking up the water control, as in the one in Half-moon Lake. Two beads were in the water, but it was clear and the poles easily fished them up, phew. I did not want to lean in to grab them by hand!

102 w, 66 rpm, a few pickups.

Had a small flurry of "can I register after the deadline?" contacts, so for the next two I'm trying a softer cut off - still advertised as the 8 pm Friday, but then just goes up to $20 for another dozen odd hours and they might get their map from my laser printer instead of Staples.

Note

Refunded one customer who said they couldn't find me at Huron Meadows to start her course. I had typed up a huge apology, then pared it back a bit when I noticed her email time stamp was from Saturday. Probably not easy to find me 20 hours before my arrival!

Another person asked for late registration, got it granted, then skipped.

Biggest mistake of the day, I think, was giving Ken a Red map instead of Green! He did great and was a good sport about it.

A few pick ups, probably not long enough or frequent enough.

I swear, 135 bpm and it's >20 mph and I'm working super hard, unlike the road where everything is 125+ just to exist.

Biking (Trainer) 36:44 [1] 9.42 mi (15.4 mph)

Heart rate during a perceived effort remains low. I thought I was going solid at 16 mph on my trainer, but still 105 bpm, versus 12 mph flat ground 120 bpm outside which I perceive as easier.

I fixed the shifting problem. One of the loose cogs was cocked every so slightly, so removing and restacking those did the trick. Brakes dragged, so I just yanked the pads which were in need of replacement anyway.

XT 11 speed = best derailleur, even with very sloppy settings it shifts fine all the time.

Apparently this was one of those deals where, you prepaid and specified a pickup time, but they didn't take you seriously until you fought your way to the counter and announced that yes you actually wanted your order. +15 minute delay. :(

The route to the park wasn't bad. It's super rutted on the crushed gravel path from people riding when it was soft, but not unbearable. Somewhat windy!

My gift for memorizing subdivisions and then riding through them is non existent. Some gravel once I broke free.

Put the old blue MTB on the trainer so I could ride the Trucker outdoors.

Things messed up:

I forgot to put the rotor back on, not a deal breaker on the trainer.

Top end gears aren't right, not sure why. Cable tension is very likely wrong.

A usable gear is available.

Starting to think this seat is higher, maybe I should raise the Trucker seat up a smidge.

No @#$!#%!@#$!@ power again, just flat. Any grade? Screwed. Occasionally riding on flat ground with no wind was pleasant. Also, generally, riding I felt like this:

The in laws property. Didn't finish on time. Re: the waterholes, I am experimenting with setting some detected features (trees in this instance) as oddball symbols, so I can convert the few correct ones and then delete the rest by symbol. Also thinking about this for form lines but haven't tried it yet.

Great rust buster. Did the Egg Scramble two days late. I started with O - Range, but I had it set to 5 m which seemed like the kind of accuracy I wanted, but S/F was off by 12 m and so was #1, where I wasted a minute before deciding to let LiveLox sort it out.

Some nice route puzzles and a shocking amount of climb for the distance.

Biggest goof was running full on towards #15, but standing above the bowl for #10 before realizing there was no #16 leading away from the circle, which meant I was one over and had aimed at the wrong circle, whoops.

A few spots would have been faster with flags. Definitely not enough for Igor, and probably not enough for 2-3-4 either.

Also not entirely bad for no glasses, as it was rainy and I didn't bring a hat. Also I recently broke my smallest glasses, which presents a problem so I should order some new progressives to have a shot at future success. My vision isn't terrible, but it gets fuzzy right at that sort of next larger feature to run at kind of distance. Then age has taken away close range focus, although if not using a prescription, I'm good to go.

Removed one dropped map at #1 and one orange egg at #6.

Let us see what LiveLox says!

Hiked the in laws trails. Meant to get it together for an Easter activity, but maybe it's not going to quite make it. Perhaps something else, like if the Simpsons and BJ/Julie are nearby (both can end up within about 10 miles).

Dear daughter, please want to go to Nationals, that excuse is sooo much nicer than the alternative.

0-5 that's a lot of wind
5-10 no one can accuse the Amish of underfeeding their horses
40-55 I will not phone my father in law, I will not phone my father in law

Once I gave up on time, and until mile 40, stopping to take pics was kind of enjoyable.

Ready to roll. Will I match or better my 2012 time? So hopeful at the start.

It's hard to see, but there is a miniature Eiffel Tower back there, and access was closed and I cried.

The Muskegon view is nice though.

Still a little snow in these parts. And this gets quality sun all day!

In my defense, it was not all that super hard pack that rolls as fast as asphalt.

Photo doesn't do it justice, but that's a pretty long way down. I need to check if there's access and no one to shoot you for doing reps.

Literally less than five miles to go, but it called for a light snack and wardrobe change (add high vis jacket, add tights) after getting a little chilled when my watts ran completely out.

I had the Move ring sorted from last night's bike ride that started before midnight but finished after, but needed the workout box checked so just a lap around the property. Between oil change, drive time, and wrangling, day went by quickly.

I intended to reset and get it at lunch time, however work conspired against.

For computer nerds, we have some very similar looking floating point conversions that don't end up with the same numbers when they end up hex/binary.
